Roman Workshop

Caz from Herts Museum came and led the morning.
She began by talking about rubbish. How we can find out a lot about how people used to live by searching through their rubbish.
The children learnt about how archaeologists work, digging up the past.
We found out that a Roman house had clay tiles, they used coins with a Roman Emperors head imprinted on it. There was a lady living in the house who lost a carved bone hairpin and a child of about 8/9 years old who had leather shoes. We learnt that they had painted walls and mosaic floors because the children unearthed painted plaster and tesserae. They drank wine and used clay pots to cook with as we found a handle to a wine storage jug and a shard of pottery that was blackened by the fire. We also found sheep teeth, therefore we deduced that they must have eaten meat.
After all our discoveries we had a Roman battle. Half the class were enlisted into the Roman army, the other half were Celts.
The result of the battle was very sad for the Celtics, as they could not stand up against the very disciplined and organised Roman army. All the Celtic army died as they refused to run away.
After playtime the children were able to handle some of the artefacts and do some close observational drawings.
Owl Class had a wonderful morning.
